Overview
Location: Central Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley
Phase: Design & Engineering
Type: Better Transit
Forecasted Opening: Phase A: 2028 Phase B: TBD Phase C: 2029
The Doran Street Grade Separation Project proposes the elimination of two at-grade rail crossings at the intersections of Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil Street near San Fernando Road at the border between the Cities of Los Angeles and Glendale.
The Project is situated in the second busiest intercity rail passenger corridor in the United States serving 8 million riders per year. The Doran Street Crossing ranks as one of the most dangerous intersections in Los Angeles County in terms of predicted collisions per year, with an average of 1.6 incidents and one fatality per year for the five-year period of 2016 – 2020. The Doran Street Grade Separation Project is critical to improving pedestrian and vehicle safety along a busy intercity passenger rail corridor that will see increased passenger and freight train volumes through pending investments by Metrolink, Metro, and the state and federal government. When completed, the Project would allow for uninterrupted commuter, intercity and future high speed rail service for the area.
Phase A of the Project, the Doran Street Grade Separation, will extend Doran Street under the State Route 134 freeway, over the Verdugo Wash, and join aerially to the existing Fairmont Avenue bridge.
Phase B of the Project, the Salem/Sperry Overpass, proposes to connect the Cities of Glendale and Los Angeles through a grade separated structure spanning over the railroad corridor and San Fernando Road for uninterrupted movement from the trains.
Phase C of the Project, the Doran Street Active Transportation Improvements proposed the Doran Street River Access Bridge to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and increase non-motorized access between employment, residences and recreational opportunities.
Status
Phase A: Doran Street Grade Separation
Metro anticipates completion and approval of final design for Phase A of the project in late 2024. Once final design is approved, Phase A construction is anticipated to begin in 2026.
Phase B: Salem/Sperry Overpass
Design efforts are ongoing for phase B of the project and is currently on hold and anticipated to continue through 2025.
Phase C: Doran Street Active Transportation Improvements
Metro is developing a Project Study Report/ Project Report (PSR/PR) which will document existing area conditions and identify and evaluate potential alternatives for further design and engineering. The PSR/PR is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2025.
