Overview
Metro’s plan for better transit includes the Foothill Extension project which will bring more travel options and access to opportunities to the San Gabriel Valley. The extension will provide 12.3 miles of new rail to the east beyond the current end point of the L Line in Azusa, and add stations in the cities of Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair.
Status
The 9.1-mile extension of the Metro A Line from Glendora to Pomona reached substantial completion in January 2025 and was officially transferred to Metro for testing and certification. Pre-revenue train operations are underway, including safety drills and system checks with emergency responders. Native and drought-tolerant landscaping is complete at all stations. The line is not yet open to the public, but final preparations are in progress to ensure safe and reliable service once an official opening date is announced.
Community Events and Milestones
Metro will announce a launch date after system testing and regulatory approvals are finalized. More information will be shared through Metro’s website and public information channels as details are confirmed.
Construction and Community Impact
Train testing is now active along the extension, with trains traveling at speeds up to 55 mph. The public is urged to obey all warning signals and never attempt to cross tracks when gates are down. Construction crews continue work on adjacent infrastructure, resulting in temporary street closures through August 2025. Affected areas include Glenwood Avenue in Glendora, Garey Avenue in Pomona, and Monte Vista Avenue near the San Dimas Park & Ride.
