Lone Hill Avenue to White Avenue Double-Track Project
Overview
Metro’s transit improvement plan includes adding a second mainline track along a 3.9-mile segment between Lone Hill Avenue in San Dimas and White Avenue in La Verne. The project also includes “Quiet Zone Ready” upgrades to roadways and sidewalks, new and upgraded track and pedestrian crossing equipment, and improvements to drainage and landscaping.
The second mainline track will allow opposing trains to operate on separate tracks, enhancing the flow of both Metrolink and Union Pacific trains while improving on-time performance and schedule reliability.
The existing railway, owned by Metro, is part of the San Gabriel Subdivision and serves both Metrolink commuter rail (approximately 38 trains daily) and Union Pacific Railroad freight service (up to four trains daily).
Status
A 30% preliminary design and environmental evaluation was completed in 2017, and the project is now in the Final Design/Plans, Specifications & Estimate (PS&E) phase. The current focus is on data collection and site assessment. The project team is engaging with key government agencies and other stakeholders while advancing the 90% design (Pre-Final Phase), which is expected to be completed by summer 2024. Final plans are anticipated for release by summer 2025, with review and approval by the Metro Board of Directors in June 2025.
