Overview

Metro’s Vermont Transit Corridor Project aims to improve travel times and provide more reliable service along Metro’s most heavily traveled bus route. The plan includes near-term bus upgrades by 2025, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) by 2028, and long-term rail study. Features like dedicated bus lanes, zero emission buses, enhanced stations that provide passenger comfort, safety and security, in addition to wayfinding that will enhance connectivity to key destination. Metro prioritizes community engagement and equity throughout the planning process and encourages your participation.
Status
Metro is planning a 12.4-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line along Vermont Avenue, from Sunset Bl. to 120th St., one of LA’s busiest transit corridors. The project prioritizes improved access, cleaner air and better bus and rail connections between Hollywood and South LA, serving over 36,000 daily riders — including diverse, transit-dependent communities.
On March 27, 2025, the Metro Board approved the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA):
-
- 12.4-mile side-running BRT
- 26 stations at 13 major intersections
The project was also found exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) under Senate Bill 922, which streamlines approvals for sustainable transit projects.
Metro is now beginning the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review and advancing into Preliminary Engineering to refine the design.
Rail remains a long-term option, with environmental review expected as early as 2026, pending funding.
Near-Term Improvements
To improve service ahead of the full BRT project, Metro is introducing bus-only lanes in the northern and southern sections of Vermont Avenue.
Parking changes between Sunset and Wilshire:
-
- Afternoons/Evenings: 4–7pm ➝ 3–7pm
- Mornings: 7–9am ➝ 7–10am
- New 7–10am limits in areas without morning restrictions.
Bus lanes will be striped and clearly marked. Drivers can still use them for right turns and driveway access, and bicyclists are welcome. These upgrades will make bus service faster, more frequent and reliable—without new roads.
