Overview
Metro’s plan for better transit includes a new light rail transit (LRT) line to southeast LA County. This project will connect Artesia, Cerritos, Bellflower, Paramount, Downey, South Gate, Cudahy, Bell, Huntington Park, Vernon, unincorporated Florence-Firestone and downtown Los Angeles. Connecting this area to Metro’s rail network will provide alternatives to driving and create more access to opportunity.
Status
In January 2022, the Metro Board of Directors selected Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS) as the northern terminus of the Southeast Gateway Line (SGL) and directed staff to conduct a separate study evaluating cost-effective alignment options between the SGL Slauson/A Line Station and LAUS via Alameda Street.
Metro, in collaboration with community leaders in downtown Los Angeles, explored potential alignments for this segment, including a refined underground alignment and an aerial median alignment along Alameda Street. The results of this study are scheduled for Metro Board review in May 2025.
Early Works and Project Milestones
Metro broke ground in October 2024 in the City of Artesia to begin advanced utility relocation work—marking the first major step toward construction of a new light rail line serving southeastern Los Angeles County.
In April 2024, the project received CEQA certification, approving 14.5 miles of new light rail from Slauson/A Line to Artesia. The approved project includes nine new stations, five parking facilities, and a maintenance facility in Bellflower. In August 2024, the project received a federal Record of Decision, making it eligible for federal funding. In October, Metro secured $231 million from the California State Transportation Agency’s Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP).
The study exploring alignment options between Slauson/A Line and LAUS remains underway. Learn more by exploring the interactive StoryMap.
